Camp Rising Sun 7/18

On July 18th, from 6:00 – 10:00, Branford Academy students and staff participated in an event to benefit Camp Rising Sun. This event, called Annual Night Out, is known as Camp Rising Sun’s biggest fundraiser of the year! It was held at Branford’s Owenego Inn, and had live music, dinner, raffles, and much more.

Camp Rising Sun Charitable Foundation was formed in order to provide long-term financial support to Camp Rising Sun, which is a camp for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Those children ranging in age from 5 to 17 years old are able to attend free of charge because of the generous donations that come from events such as their Annual Night Out. The camp’s mission is to allow all campers to “have fun, improve familiar skills, learn new skills and develop self-confidence by joining in camp activities in a secure positive place.” The camp itself is staffed by volunteers who give a week of their time to this amazing organization. There is also a pediatric oncologist, as well as three nurses on campus and on call 24 hours a day, so that parents and children together can rest assured that they will be well cared for during their fun stay at camp.

To their amazement, Camp Rising Sun began with only 8 children their first year running, and has now grown to serve over 100 campers! With the help of events like the Annual Night Out, we can ensure that this camp will be around for years to come, to hopefully serve even more children living with cancer.
